Do you understand and learn from the bottom up, or from the top down? It is interesting to look at the difference between people that look at the big picture versus focusing on the details. Both aspects are important in language and in anything, but sometimes one in particular method can be more useful.
We were doing an exercise in class that gave us a list of sentences that didn't spell anything, or make any kind of sense on paper. However, these sentences would "make sense" when read aloud.
